On Europe Day, held at the historic Vodnik Homestead (Vodnikova domačija) in Ljubljana, we delved into the rich and diverse literary landscape that Europe has to offer. The event provided an enlightening journey through the literary traditions of several European countries, showcasing examples of good practices from the literary world. Representatives from national cultural institutes shared insights into their nation's literary achievements, highlighting the role literature plays in shaping cultural identity and fostering international dialogue.
First Dr. Alix Landgrebe from Goethe-Institut transported us to Germany’s Leipzig Book Fair, a renowned literary event that embodies the spirit of German literature. The fair, celebrated for its open and inclusive approach, provided a platform for authors, publishers, and readers to engage in meaningful dialogue.
The Liszt Institute, represented by Bíborka Molnár-Gábor, showcased the Petőfi Literary Fund, a pillar of Hungary's literary management scene. The fund, known for its varied calls, supports writers, publishers, and translators, presenting Hungarian literature on the global stage.
Representing the Italian Institute for Culture in Slovenia, Verena Vittur presented the concept of Literary Parks. These parks, dedicated to celebrating and preserving the landscapes that inspired some of Italy’s greatest literary works, offeres visitors an immersive experience blending natural beauty with cultural and literary significance as a unique model for literary tourism.
Following this, the French Institute in Slovenia, under the guidance of Karl Cogard, introduced us to the concept of the 'literary season' or 'la rentrée littéraire'. This unique French tradition, which marks the autumnal launch of new literary works, highlights an influx of hundreds of new titles.
The event not only explored the literary achievements of these countries but also fostered connection among the cultural institutes in Ljubljana. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with the directors of these institutes and exchange ideas. As part of the celebration, participants enjoyed a selection of traditional food and drinks from the featured countries, adding a culinary dimension to the literary journey.
